He did this by bringing a similar passion for queer style to bear in his photos as he had in his party costumes. In the 1920s the British media were fascinated, and sometimes appalled, by the antics of a group of young fashionistas who were variously referred to as the “bright young things” or “bright young people.” Many of the members of this set were queer, and some of them, such as the leading fashion photographer Cecil Beaton, were to play an important role in making freak chic.
